The Pentecost

Book, Chapter 13 (Faith First)
Book, Chapter 11 (Be My Disciples))

In this chapter we discuss the following topics:

The Pentecost

The Holy Spirit

The Pentecost

Originally, the Pentecost was a jewish holiday - The Harvest Festival celebrated on the fiftieth day after the Passover. It was then, after Jesus' crucifixion, that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, thus the Church was born.

The Holy Spirit

According the Acts of the Apostles, it was manifested by tongues of fire over all the apostles, and each apostle received the gift of tongues (the ability to speak different languages). As we already know about the Holy Spirit, at that moment the apostles were:
  • strengthtened

  •
  • received understanding

  •
  • obtained courage
and they began to proclaim the Good News boldly to other people despite existing persecution. Peter went out asking people to repent and to be baptized. The Holy Spirit did not affect only the Jesus' apostles then. That day 5000 people asked to be baptized.
